The following information will help clarify the process and allay concerns about employing an international student who studies at or who has graduated from ؾ.</p> <h2>Who can legally work in the USA?</h2> <p>ؾ students and alumni in the following categories are legally authorized to work in the United States:</p> <ul> <li>U.S. citizens</li> <li>Permanent U.S. residents (commonly referred to as “Green Card” holders)</li> <li>Asylees and Asylum Seekers</li> <li>DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)</li> <li>International students with one of the following authorizations: <ol> <li>CPT (Curricular Practical Training) — employment authorization for internships for degree-seeking student while pursuing a degree.</li> <li>OPT (Occupational Practical Training) — employment authorization for a degree-seeking student for 12 months immediately after graduation.</li> <li>STEM OPT Extension — additional employment authorization for certain majors for 24 months immediately after regular OPT.</li> <li>Academic Training — employment authorization for J-1 visa holders (visiting scholars, exchange students) during or immediately following their non-degree program in the USA.</li> </ol> </li> </ul> <p>CPT, OPT and Academic Training allow international students to obtain on-the-job experience in their area of study.&nbsp;These programs do not require employer sponsorship; rather, the authorization is granted by ؾ and/or the U.S. government, so the student you wish to hire must simply present this authorization to you.</p> <h2>How to determine if an international student is legally employable</h2> <p>When hiring a non-citizen who holds an F-1 or J-1 visa, it is easy to verify that the student has the appropriate employment authorization:</p> <ul> <li>CPT — Current student will present a I-20 with employment authorization granted by ؾ in section “Employment Authorization” section at top of pg. 2. The name of employer and dates of authorization are recorded in this section.</li> <li>OPT — ؾ graduate will present an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card issued by the U.S. government that lists beginning and end dates for employment. Employment is not tied to a specific employer, so employer name is not recorded on EAD. OPT authorization is awarded by the U.S. government, not by ؾ.</li> <li>STEM OPT — Eligible graduates receive an automatic 180-day extension of work authorization as long as they have timely filed their application. You can earn ؾ credit for your pre-approved study abroad program, and your study abroad experience will be listed on your transcript!</p><p>Study abroad can be affordable and there are many wonderful scholarship opportunities available. It is consistently ranked among the leading universities in the world. Melbourne provides students with a well-rounded education that will help them meet career aspirations and life goals. Melbourne degrees incorporate six broad undergraduate degrees including arts, biomedicine, commerce, environments, music, and science. This system places Melbourne at the forefront of educational reforms in the country.</p><h3>England</h3><h4><a href="http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/international/study-abroad-programmes/incoming-students/study-abroad-programme/" target="_blank">London Metropolitan University</a></h4><p>LMU is a diverse and vibrant university right in the center of London. LMU offers courses from design to life sciences; from business to computing; and law to anthropology. This program is open to eligible CCPA students. RNCM offers the hallmarks of a classic higher education experience amongst the hustle and bustle of an international renowned conservatoire. RNCM is also an arts center with four public venues. Music flows from every pore of the purpose built college building and there is a crackle of energy and creative abundance amongst students, artists, and audiences that ensures RNCM’s position as a major international center for education, training, and performance.</p><h4><a href="http://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/sabroad/guide/" target="_blank">University of Sussex</a></h4><p>Located in Sussex in the United Kingdom, and founded in the 1960’s, Sussex has become a leading teaching and research institution. With over 13,000 students, creative thinking, pedagogic diversity, intellectual challenge, and interdisciplinarity have always been fundamental to a Sussex education. Sussex offers a wide variety of academic programs and is ranked as one of the top universities in Europe. This exchange program is open to all, but history majors are preferred.</p><h3>Finland</h3><h4><a href="http://www.uniarts.fi/en/about-us" target="_blank">Sibelius Academy</a>&nbsp;- CCPA students only</h4><p>Sibelius Academy is located in Helsinki, Finland and is open to all eligible CCPA students. The academy is responsible for providing the highest level of music education in Finland. It trains artists skilled in independent artistic work, teachers and other music professionals. Sibelius Academy is also responsible for developing the Finnish music culture and fostering music tradition. There are over 1,400 students in the academy who study such things as classical music performance, composition and music theory, conducting, jazz, music education, folk and church music, and music technology.</p><h3>Netherlands</h3><h4><a href="https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/education/exchange-programs/" target="_blank">Tilburg University</a></h4><p>Tilburg University is a dynamic institution with top quality education and research, a compact campus and excellent facilities (library, computers, and sports). The university also has a strong commitment to international cooperation, with a goal of offering all classes in English in the near future. UI business students will find ample coursework in English available in economics, business administration, information management, international business, international economics and finance. An intensive Dutch language course is also offered. The university, with its five faculties (Art and Design, Communication, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering and Natural Sciences, Law), is dedicated to becoming a leader in educational and cultural fields in Turkey and establishing itself as an international center for research and scientific development. Be prepared to tell the Office of International Programs why you are interested in an approved program instead of the affiliated or exchange programs.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="accordion-container"> <div class="accordion-toggle"> How Do I Pay for Study Abroad? <span class="toggle-icon"><span class="fa fa-plus-square"></span></span> </div> <div class="accordion-content"> <div class="accordion-content-container"> <p>When you decide to enroll in a study abroad program, you commit yourself not only to the thorough preparation necessary for you to experience the program’s full benefits, but also to a significant financial investment. Before applying to any program, you are urged to plan carefully and to be completely familiar with the complete cost of participation. In additional to tuition, housing and food, you will need to budget for airfare, local travel, books/supplies, and socializing.</p><p>All students who study abroad will be billed by ؾ for at least a portion of the study abroad fee. The amount that you pay will vary according to the program you select. it is helpful if you know how you are paying your tuition and fee - scholarships, FAFSA®, personal funds, etc.</p><p>It's a good idea to review what is included in your program fees. Check if the fees include tuition, housing, travel, or other services. You may also apply for additional scholarships to study abroad. Keep in mind that scholarships to study abroad are highly competitive, require additional applications, and have a lengthy review process.</p><h3>Paying for Exchange Programs</h3><p>Students participating in exchange programs will be charged ؾ full-time undergraduate tuition. Housing, meals, airfare, and all other non-academic costs are the responsibility of the student. Because you will pay your tuition to ؾ this is a good option if you have significant scholarships or grants from ؾ.</p><h3>Paying for Approved Study Abroad Programs</h3><p>Students pay the advertised cost of the affiliated program plus a $500 administrative fee to ؾ. Your student account will be assessed the cost of your program several weeks before your departure. Unless otherwise instructed by International Programs or Financial Aid, you should not make payments to your host institution or program provider for any tuition or academic-related expenses. Furthermore, you must have a zero balance on your RU student account at the time of departure. If you have an outstanding balance from a previous semester, your study abroad registration will be purged and you will not be allowed to study abroad.</p><p>Please be sure to review what is covered by your program fees. Some approved programs may have a lower tuition cost than ؾ tuition. Others may initially appear to be much higher, but include housing costs or other services. If you have ؾ scholarships or grants, they will not be able to be used on these programs.</p><h3>Paying for Faculty-led Programs</h3><p>Participants pay a fee for the travel portion of the class; this fee is in addition to tuition charges. A student will receive a link to the Study Abroad Application after meeting with the Office of International Programs.</p><p>Below are general guideless on which types of financial aid can be used for study abroad:</p><ul><li><strong>Exchange Programs:</strong> Participants may apply federal, state and institutional financial aid, and tuition remission awards to the cost of the program. Work-study funds, RU housing grants, and performance scholarships cannot be used.</li><li><strong>Affiliated Programs:</strong> Participants pay the advertised cost of the program plus a $500 fee to ؾ to ensure the transfer of credit and to pay for administrative support of their participation.&nbsp; You may be able to apply federal financial aid funds to the cost of an affiliated program. You will not be able to use ؾ scholarships and grants to these programs.</li><li><strong>Faculty-led Programs:</strong> Although students who qualify for financial aid may apply that aid to the cost of the tuition charge for the class, there is no financial aid available for the travel portion of the fee. Scholarship funds may be available; inquire when applying.</li></ul><h3>Scholarships</h3><p>Each year, more than $600,000 in scholarships and grants are awarded to deserving students, largely through competitive fellowship programs. Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central &amp; Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.</p><p>Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. As part of the African Languages Initiative, Boren Award applicants have the opportunity to further their study of Akan/Twi, Hausa, Portuguese, Swahili, Wolof, Yoruba, or Zulu. Your choice of programs will be influenced by academics, geographic location and finances.</li><li>Do you want to study in English of another language? Study abroad is a great way to learn another language or improve your second language skills!</li><li>Consult your academic advisor to determine remaining degree requirements.</li><li>If you have general education requirements or electives remaining these are often a good choice for study abroad as there is more flexibility in what class you may take.</li><li>Discuss desire to study abroad with family members.</li><li>Carefully assess to total cost of the study abroad program you have selected.</li></ul><h4>2. Talk to your Academic Advisor</h4><ul><li>Let your advisor know your would like to study abroad. This will help you plan your classes.</li><li>Are there classes in your major you can take while studying abroad? If not how many electives do you have? What classes must you take at ؾ? When are they offered?</li><li>Have you taken all of your general education requirements? This is a great way to fulfill requirements for humanities and social sciences!</li></ul><h4>3. Meet with the Office of International Programs</h4><ul><li>In order to begin the application process, you will need to meet with the Office of International Programs.</li><li>To book an appointment with the Office of International Programs, use the <a href="https://roosevelt.campus.eab.com/home">Navigate application</a> and select “International Programs".</li></ul><h4>4. Begin the Study Abroad Application</h4><ul><li>After meeting with the Office of International Programs, you will be sent a link to begin the Study Abroad Application.</li><li>Review the timeline listed above and complete the steps by the deadlines indicated.</li><li>The Study Abroad Application is a multi-step process which includes applying to your selected Study Abroad program, receiving approval for the courses you plan to take abroad, and completing a financial aid worksheet.</li></ul><h4>5. Many countries have consulates right here in Chicago</li><li><strong>Check your I-94 record each time you enter the US.</strong> Your I-94 shows that you have legally entered the US and should show that you are in F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor and with permission to remain in the US for D/S (duration of status).&nbsp;<a href="https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94">Visit the US Customs and Border Protection's website to view your I-94 record</a>. If your record does not show the correct status or does not show D/S, please visit OIP immediately.</li><li><strong>Make sure that your form I-20 or DS-2019 does not expire.</strong> If you will not finish your degree before the program completion date on your form I-20 or DS-2019, you must apply for a&nbsp;Program Extension. We’re here to help!</li></ul><h4>Class Schedule and Vacations</h4><ul><li><strong>Register full-time during the fall and spring semesters. </strong>You are not required to take any classes during the summer sessions.<ul><li>Full-time enrollment for undergraduate students is at least 12 credit hours per semester.</li><li>Full-time enrollment for graduate students is at least 9 credit hours per semester.</li><li>Full-time enrollment for CCPA Opera Diploma students is at least 6 credit hours per semester.</li></ul></li><li><strong>Students are not permitted to take courses at any other institution outside of ؾ</strong> unless you are granted permission. To discuss your options, please contact <a href="mailto:international@roosevelt.edu">international@roosevelt.edu</a>.</li><li><strong>Students are permitted to take one online/remote course per term. </strong>This means that they can take either one full semester (16 week) online/remote course or one online/remote course per 8-week term (Term A or Term B). Students may take as many online/remote classes as they wish during the summer term.</li><li><strong>Students are required to attend all their classes to remain compliant with their F-1 or J-1 visa.</strong> If a student has an emergency that requires that they miss class, they should get in touch with their professors and the Office of International Programs.</li><li>As an international student, you are granted a specific period of time to complete your degree requirements. <strong>You must complete your degree by the completion date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019.</strong> If you cannot finish your degree requirements by the estimated program end date, you must request a program extension and have been approved before your current I-20 or DS-2019 expires. Please email international@roosevelt.edu to begin this process.</li><li><strong>If you have changed your Major, added a Major/Minor, or changed the Degree Level </strong>(i.e. such as changing from a master’s to doctoral program), your SEVIS record will need to be updated. This is required even if you&nbsp;did not work&nbsp;in the USA. Income taxes are due on April 15 in the following year; some years this may be 1-2 days later if April 15 is a weekend or holiday.</p><p>You are responsible for completing these forms. Please see the section on STEM OPT for more information.</p><h4>When should I apply?</h4><p>Applications for post-completion OPT should be submitted approximately&nbsp;90 days&nbsp;before the projected start date. OPT applications must be received by USCIS&nbsp;BEFORE&nbsp;the end of a student's 60-day grace period. You can begin working on or after the start date listed on the EAD and may until the end date on the EAD card.</p><h4>How do I apply?</h4><ol><li><a href="/current-students/academics/graduation/grad-prep ">Apply for graduation</a>. This is only applicable for students applying for post-completion OPT.</li><li><a href="https://secure.touchnet.com:443/C21300_ustores/web/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTID=455">Pay your International Programs OPT fee</a>. For all RU students who wish to apply for OPT or STEM OPT, they will be required to pay a $100 processing fee to the Office of International Programs. Please note that this fee is required in order to receive your Form I-20 with OPT recommended by RU. This fee is separate from the USCIS processing fee attached to your I-765.</li><li>Submit an <a href="https://federation.ngwebsolutions.com/sp/startSSO.ping?PartnerIdpId=https://myqlidp.roosevelt.edu&amp;SpSessionAuthnAdapterId=rooseveltDF&amp;TargetResource=https%3a%2f%2fdynamicforms.ngwebsolutions.com%2fSubmit%2fStart%2f1e287936-262f-499a-82aa-a330d211c472">OPT Request Form</a> to International Programs for an updated I-20 that recommends OPT. Please note that it may take up to 7 business days for International Programs to review your OPT Request.</li><li>Receive your OPT Recommendation on your Form I-20 via email along with detailed instructions on the documents you need to prepare and how to file your I-765 Application online. Once you receive your updated I-20 from OIP that has your OPT recommended, you have 30 days to submit your I-765.</li><li><p>Prepare documents to send to USIC: USCIS must receive the OPT application <strong>no more than 30 days after the OPT recommendation has been issued</strong>. Applications received more than 30 days after the OPT recommendation will be denied.&nbsp;<br>The following documents are required to apply for the EAD (OPT work permit). You will be asked to create a profile, which you can use to track the status of your application. We do not recommend applying through the mail as this can lengthen the application process.&nbsp;<br><br>You can contact <a href="mailto:international@roosevelt.edu">international@roosevelt.edu</a> to schedule a Zoom session for assistance in completing the application online.</li></ol><h4>Unemployment while on OPT</h4><p>Students on post-completion OPT are limited to 90 days of unemployment. Students who are unemployed beyond the 90-day limit may be denied future immigration benefits and are in violation of their F-1 Visa status.</p><p>Volunteer work, internships, unpaid employment, and part-time jobs may be counted as employment. If you do not find a job within the first two months of OPT, you may look for a volunteer position and/or an internship while you continue to search for a full-time, paid position. Please note that part-time employment should be at least 20 hours/week.</p><p>If you are unable to find employment, you should make plans to change your status or leave the USA. If you will leave the USA, please contact the Office of International Programs to notify us of your departure so this information can be reported on your SEVIS record.</p><h4>Reporting Requirements</h4><p>You must report your employment using the <a href="https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/sevp-portal-help">SEVP Portal</a>. Failure to report this information may result in termination of your SEVIS record and F-1 student status. The following list contains suggested evidence of employment:</p><ul><li>Payroll or income tax information (including proof of filing your taxes)</li><li>Description of work</li><li>Signed letter from employer stating how nature of the work is related to student’s degree, if not already implicit in job description</li></ul><p>You may be required to prove the existence (or nonexistence) of periods of unemployment in future petitions for immigration benefits; therefore, it is very important to document the start and end dates of any periods of unemployment, along with the employment information above. Remember, this is your responsibility.</p><h4>SEVP Portal</h4><p>Students on post-completion OPT should use the SEVP Portal to comply with reporting requirements. You may contact <a href="mailto:international@roosevelt.edu">international@roosevelt.edu</a> to reset the portal access or if you have questions about the process.</p><h4>OPT Travel Advisory</h4><p>Traveling outside of the US while your OPT is pending can be a risky affair with no certainty that you will be allowed back in. After you have received your EAD card there is still a risk of not being permitted back into the US, especially if you are not employed. If travel is necessary, you should carry all of the following documentation with you when traveling:</p><ul><li>Your EAD card</li><li>A travel endorsement signature on your current I- 20&nbsp;</li><li>A letter from your employer confirming your OPT status and stating the purpose of your travel.</li></ul><p>If you do not possess a current, valid visa at the time of travel, you must apply for a new F-1 visa for re-entry to the US.</p><h4>Automatic “Cap-Gap” Extension for H-1B applicants</h4><p>The F-1/H-1B “Cap-Gap” occurs when an F-1 student's status expires before they can begin approved H-1B employment in the next fiscal year beginning October 1. The Cap-Gap Extension applies to all F-1 beneficiaries of H-1B and concurrent change of status petitions. Under this rule, F-1 status is extended while the H-1B petition is pending; F-1 students may remain in the U.S. until October 1 of the next fiscal year when their H-1B status begins. The student must have a valid EAD card at the time the H-1B application is submitted to USCIS in April.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="accordion-container"> <div class="accordion-toggle"> STEM OPT 24-Month Extension <span class="toggle-icon"><span class="fa fa-plus-square"></span></span> </div> <div class="accordion-content"> <div class="accordion-content-container"> <p>An F-1 student currently engaged in a period of post-completion OPT may be eligible to apply for a 24-month STEM extension. Extension applications are accepted only for students currently working on OPT, not from students who are initially applying for post-completion OPT. You must submit the&nbsp;<a href="https://federation.ngwebsolutions.com/sp/startSSO.ping?PartnerIdpId=https://myqlidp.roosevelt.edu&amp;SpSessionAuthnAdapterId=rooseveltDF&amp;TargetResource=https%3a%2f%2fdynamicforms.ngwebsolutions.com%2fSubmit%2fStart%2fc534e2cd-b759-40b0-8db1-e1bd27c8e12d ">STEM OPT Request</a> and <a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i983.pdf">Form I-983</a> before you can apply.</p><p>The student must have been awarded a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in an approved STEM field and work for an E-Verify employer. To determine your eligibility, check the <a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/stemList2022.pdf">DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List</a> and the Program of Study listed on your I-20.</p><h4>Who qualifies for the stem extension?</h4><p>DHS grants STEM OPT extensions to eligible F-1 students once&nbsp;per degree level&nbsp;(i.e., bachelor's, master's, or doctorate). An F-1 student is allowed two 24-month extensions total. Each extension must be used immediately after the completion of a qualifying higher level degree program. You cannot combine the two periods of STEM extension.</p><p>The degree must be on the current&nbsp;<a href="https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/eligible-cip-codes-for-the-stem-opt-extension">STEM Designated Degree Program List</a>&nbsp;at the time of application for the STEM Extension. This applies to both current and previous degrees.</p><p>To qualify for the extension the student must be in a valid period of 12-month post completion OPT (even if the OPT is based on a non-STEM degree). For students requesting the extension on a previous STEM degree:</p><ul><li>The degree must have been received within 10 years of the STEM extension application date.n&gt;</li><li>The degree must have been awarded from an institution that is accredited by the US Department of Education and Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified at the time of application for the 24-month STEM extension.</li><li>Students may not apply based on degrees competed outside of the US.</li><li>The work being done for the STEM extension must relate to the STEM degree.</li></ul><p>Students must work at least 20 hours per week in a paid position for an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.e-verify.gov/">E-Verify employer</a>. Volunteering and self-employment are not allowed during the STEM Extension. Most temporary agency and contract work will not be eligible for the 24-month STEM extension.</p><h4>What must my employer do?</h4><p>The STEM OPT employer must be enrolled in <a href="https://www.e-verify.gov/">USCIS' E-Verify employment eligibility verification program</a>.</p><p>The STEM OPT employer must work with the student to create a formal training plan and complete the <a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i983.pdf">Form I-983</a>.</p><ul><li>Employers may use existing training programs for evaluating the progress of STEM OPT students, as long as the existing training program meets DHS’s requirements as outlined on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i983.pdf">Form I-983</a>.</li><li>The formal training plan must clearly state the STEM OPT student’s learning objectives and the employer’s commitment to helping the student achieve those objectives.</li><li>The completed <a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i983.pdf">Form I-983 </a>must be submitted to the Office of International Programs with the <a href="https://federation.ngwebsolutions.com/sp/startSSO.ping?PartnerIdpId=https://myqlidp.roosevelt.edu&amp;SpSessionAuthnAdapterId=rooseveltDF&amp;TargetResource=https%3a%2f%2fdynamicforms.ngwebsolutions.com%2fSubmit%2fStart%2fc534e2cd-b759-40b0-8db1-e1bd27c8e12d ">STEM OPT Request</a>.</li></ul><p>STEM OPT students may participate in entrepreneurial ventures. However, they may not fill out their own <a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i983.pdf">Form I-983</a>, nor act as their own employer for the purposes of the form.</p><p>Employers are responsible for reporting any material changes to, or material deviations from, the student’s formal training plan. Students may apply as early as 90 days before the end of the current OPT period.</p><p>Your OPT application must be received by USCIS within 60 days of the issuance of your new STEM OPT I-20. If the application is filed in a timely manner, a 180-day automatic work authorization extension will be granted while the application is pending. It normally takes up to 90 days for USCIS to process STEM OPT extension applications.</p><h4>How do I apply?</h4><ol><li>Work with your employer to complete the <a href="https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i983.pdf">Form I-983</a>, which is signed by your employer. For all RU students who wish to apply for OPT or STEM OPT, they will be required to pay a $100 processing fee to the Office of International Programs. Please note that this fee is required in order to receive your Form I-20 with STEM OPT recommended by RU. Please note that it may take up to 7 business days for International Programs to review your OPT Request.<ol><li>If you are requesting the STEM extension based upon a previous degree provide a photocopy of your I-20 from the previous university and proof of the degree awarded (this may be an unofficial copy of your transcript). Additional documents may be required to verify that your degree meets the requirements for the extension and is listed on <a href="https://www.e-verify.gov/">USCIS' E-Verify employment eligibility verification program</a>.</li></ol></li><li>Receive your OPT Recommendation on your Form I-20 via email along with detailed instructions on the documents you need to prepare and how to file your I-765 Application online. You may be authorized for Academic Training during your program or after you have finished your study. You must receive written approval from International Programs at least two weeks before the program end date on your form DS-2019.</p><h4>Am I eligible to apply?</h4><ul><li>You must have a valid DS-2019 issued by ؾ. If your DS-2019 was not issued by ؾ, please contact your program sponsor regarding Academic Training authorization requirements and procedures.</li><li>You must be maintaining your J-1 student status and in good academic standing.</li><li>Academic Training must be directly related to your field of study as listed on your DS-2019.</li><li>You must have permission from your home institution or sponsor to engage in practical training.</li><li>You must have an internship offer and request authorization&nbsp;<span>before</span>&nbsp;the end date listed on your DS-2019 (no extensions or academic training authorizations can be issued after the program expiration date).</li></ul><h4>How much academic training can I use?</h4><ul><li>Academic Training may be granted for a maximum of 18 months or the period of time spent as a full-time J-1 student at ؾ,&nbsp;<span>whichever is shorter</span>. If you already have a Social Security Number, you do not need to apply again. Make sure to bring your SSN card to Human Resources when you receive it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="accordion-container"> <div class="accordion-toggle"> Taxes for International Students <span class="toggle-icon"><span class="fa fa-plus-square"></span></span> </div> <div class="accordion-content"> <div class="accordion-content-container"> <h4 id="taxes">Who must file taxes in the USA?</h4><p>All F-1 and J-1 students (and their F-2 or J-2 dependents) are required to file income tax forms for each year they are present in the USA. This is required even if you&nbsp;<span>did not work</span>&nbsp;in the USA. If you are in the U.S. in another immigration status, this information may not apply to you.</p><p>Each individual has a unique tax position and is responsible for his or her own tax determination and compliance. The Office of International Programs cannot assist you in filing your taxes.</p><p>Income taxes are due on April 15 in the following year; some years this may be 1-2 days later if April 15 is a weekend or holiday. This means that you will be filling your taxes for 2022 in April of 2023.</p><p>You are responsible for completing these forms. Unfortunately, during the "tax season" there is an increased chance of tax scams - the IRS has posted this notice of <a href="https://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Scam-Phone-Calls-Continue-IRS-Identifies-Five-Easy-Ways-to-Spot-Suspicious-Calls">Five Easy Ways to Spot Suspicious Calls</a>. Remember, the IRS (or other US Government agencies) does not use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue; the IRS will not call you if you owe taxes without first sending you a bill in the mail.</p><h4>All F-1 &amp; J-1 students who were in the USA for any part of the previous calendar year</h4><p>You must file the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8843.pdf">Tax Form 8843</a>&nbsp;- Statement for&nbsp;<strong>Exempt Individuals</strong>&nbsp;and Individuals With a Medical Condition.&nbsp; You are classified as an "Exempt Individual" . You should file this form even if you&nbsp;<span>did not work</span> during the year.</p><p>You should complete this form to show that you are a "non-resident" for tax purposes (an "exempt individual"). This means that you may qualify for tax treaty or other benefits that reduce your tax rate if you are employed in the USA or have a taxable scholarship. You must submit this form each year to qualify as a "non-resident" for tax purposes. You should file this form during the <span><strong>first 5 years</strong></span> you are in the U.S. as an F-1 or J-1 Student.</p><h4>For all F-1 &amp; J-1 students who worked during any part of the previous calendar year</h4><p>All international students who worked for any part of the previous year must file the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8843.pdf">Tax Form 8843</a>&nbsp;AND&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf">U.S. Individual Income Tax Return</a>.</p><p>Most students are considered non-residents for tax purposes.&nbsp; However, you; however, if you have been in the U.S. for more than 5 years, you may need to file as a resident.&nbsp; You can find help to determine your residency for "Tax Purposes" by reviewing&nbsp;<a href="http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc851.html">Tax Topic 851 - Resident and Nonresident Aliens</a>.</p><p>You must also file Illinois State Tax Forms (<a href="https://tax.illinois.gov/forms/incometax/currentyear/il-1040.html">IL-1040</a>).&nbsp; If you were in the U.S. in a state other than Illinois, you may need to file additional forms.</p><h4>What do I need to prepare my taxes?</h4><p>Please bring any of the following documents that you have been issued if you meet with a tax preparer. <span>You may not have all of these documents</span>.
